Outreach Staff Works on Prevention Programs

Despite the heavy snow, we at DOVES Outreach Center have still managed to get a lot done in the month of January. Our big focus on the month has been preparing for February, which is Teen Dating Violence Awareness month. Quinton, Maria, Tonya, and Laura will be going to Big Bear High School for five days to talk to Freshman Studies classes. In addition to this, Quinton and Maria have continued their work with the students at Chautauqua High School.

Quinton and Maria also traveled to Sacramento in January to attend a training on Prevention of Domestic Violence, with a focus on Teen Domestic Violence. The training, entitled “Building Change Together”, was put on by the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence, and was a great success. Over the course of four days, we covered topics ranging from organizational management, to growth of programs.

Our Latino Advocacy department has also seen some big changes recently. Thanks to the work of Therapist Maritza Torres, we are now able to offer a group therapy class for Spanish speaking clients. Ms. Torres has also been meeting with Spanish speaking clients in a one-on-one setting and offering them therapy. Advocate Laura Morales-Rojas deserves a big “Thank You”, for connecting with Maritza Torres and brokering a deal in which our clients can benefit from her services.

*The Spanish group therapy class, “Love Without Violence”, meets Fridays from 2:30-4:00 PM @ the DOVES Outreach Center
